Isola d’Elba

 

Ho visitato l’Elba a settembre, quando la flotta del turismo solitamente comincia a scemare. Ho scelto di alloggiare e di muovermi lungo la costa est  dell’isola. Dalla spiaggia di Naregno, a Porto Azzurro, fino a Rio Marina.

Il mare è semplicemente meraviglioso. I colori dell’acqua sono veramente intensi. Acqua cristallina, fondali incredibili, pesci a non finire. Ogni caletta è un piccolo mondo a parte. Ma non c’è solo il mare. Paesini con porticcioli meravigliosi, fari, pontili, zone montuose a picco sul mare, piante e fiori della macchia mediterranea da scoprire.

Le mie foto, però, hanno cercato di catturare la luce, più che i colori del mare. Per questo, scattare all’alba, ha davvero una marcia in più. Ho sempre preferito dare il benvenuto invece che l’arrivederci. Non che il sole al tramonto non mi piaccia, solo che la luce dell’alba è più mistica ed evocativa. La sveglia delle 5:30 era ormai diventata il promemoria dell’incontro giornaliero col sorgere del sole. Pantaloncini e maglietta, scarpe ai piedi, torcia in testa e borsa fotografica in spalla. Questa era la routine di ogni mattina.

Non credevo che l’alba potesse assumere colori così intensi. All’Isola d’Elba, quando il sole viene su dall’orizzonte del mare, è pura magia. Di solito, colori così forti li ho sempre visti al tramonto. L’alba, in genere, ha sfumature più delicate, più morbide. Il nuovo giorno comincia di fronte a te. Tu sei lì, davanti, ad aspettarlo. Solo. Silenzio e sfumature di colori sono l’unica cosa che senti e che vedi. Forse è proprio questo che adoro dell’alba. Mi fa sentire parte della natura stessa.

Camminare al buio, lungo i sentieri che si inerpicano lungo la costa; assaporare i profumi genuini della macchia mediterranea; scendere lungo i viottoli per poi ritrovarsi davanti una caletta paradisiaca; aspettare il sorgere del sole cercando un’inquadratura che possa descrivere al meglio questi momenti. La sensazione di libertà è meravigliosa.

I visited Elba in September, when the tourism fleet usually begins to fade. I chose to stay and move along the east coast of the island. From the beach of Naregno, to Porto Azzurro, up to Rio Marina.

The sea is simply wonderful. Colors of the water are really intense. Crystal clear water, incredible backdrops, endless fish. Each cove is a small world of its own. But there is not only the sea. Villages with marvelous marinas, lighthouses, piers, mountainous areas overlooking the sea, plants and flowers of the Mediterranean maquis to be discovered.

My photos, however, have tried to capture the light, more than the colors of the sea. This is why shooting at dawn really has something extra. I have always preferred to welcome instead of goodbye. Not that I don’t like the setting sun, only that the light of dawn is more mystical and evocative. The 5:30 am wake-up call had now become the reminder of the daily meeting with sunrise. Shorts and shirt, foot shoes, head torch and photography-bag on my shoulder. This was every morning’s routine.

I didn’t believe that dawn could take on such intense colors. On Elba Island, when the sun comes up from the horizon of the sea, it’s pure magic. Usually, I’ve seen such strong colors at sunset. Dawn generally has more delicate, softer nuances. New day begins in front of you. You are there, waiting for it. Lonely. Silence and shades of colors are the only thing you hear and see. Maybe that’s what I love about dawn. It makes me feel part of nature itself.

Walking in the darkness, along the paths that climb along the coast; savor the genuine aromas of the Mediterranean maquis; go down the lanes and then find yourself in front of a heavenly cove; wait for the sunrise looking for a shot that can best describe these moments. The feeling of freedom is wonderful.

These is what I love about photography. These are the moments that I immortalized on the Elba Island.
